In neighborhoods across Washington, DC, the District Bridges team spends its days walking alongside people navigating housing insecurity, substance use disorder, and the many small crises that come with living on the edge. They know that often, the first thing someone needs is not a long conversation or a list of resources. It is something immediate: a meal, a moment of relief, a sign that someone sees them.
That is where Breadcoin entered the picture. Breadcoin and District Bridges were introduced in 2021 through a shared connection. It quickly became clear that our organizations belonged together. District Bridges was already building relationships in the community through its Community Navigation program. Breadcoin offered a way to meet practical needs while supporting the local businesses that are part of those same neighborhoods.
Today, District Bridges includes Breadcoin as a regular part of its work, purchasing tens of thousands of dollars in Breadcoins over the past two years. As the Community Navigation team moves through the neighborhood, they place the coins directly into the hands of people they know by name.
More Than Food
Breadcoins can help someone get a hot meal from a neighborhood restaurant instead of going hungry another day. They give people the chance to choose what they want to eat and to walk into a local business as a customer. Breadcoin ensures that the money stays in the community, supporting the small businesses that make these neighborhoods feel like home.
District Bridges has also begun gathering people around shared tables. What begins with Breadcoin and a meal often turns into something larger: people lingering after they have eaten, learning one another’s names, telling their stories, feeling for a moment less alone.
More recently, our partnership has grown in both directions. District Bridges has helped Breadcoin connect with new vendors, including Byblos, a neighborhood restaurant that had already been donating meals every day. Breadcoin created a way for their generosity to continue without asking the business to carry the burden alone.
That is what makes our partnership matter. It is not only about food. It is about creating the kind of neighborhood where people care for one another, where local businesses are part of the solution, and where everyone has a place at the table.
We believe every community needs partnerships like this. If your organization is looking for a way to respond to hunger while supporting local businesses, learn more about becoming a Breadcoin partner.
