About Breadcoin
Breadcoin works like a local currency that can be used to buy meals at participating restaurants, cafés, food trucks, and markets. It gives people the freedom to choose the food they want while supporting local businesses at the same time.
Community members, businesses, and donors fund Breadcoin by purchasing coins or making financial contributions. Trusted local organizations distribute Breadcoin to people experiencing food insecurity, who can then redeem it for meals at participating food businesses. Breadcoin combines the flexibility of cash with the purpose of food assistance. Instead of limiting people to one pantry or one meal, it lets them choose where and what to eat while keeping food dollars in the local economy.
The coin makes Breadcoin easy to recognize, simple to distribute, and accessible to everyone, including people without smartphones or bank accounts. It also creates a tangible reminder that every person deserves dignity and choice. The very handing-over of it engenders a conversation between two people who might never have otherwise met.
Breadcoin is designed specifically for food. Every coin is redeemed at a participating local food business, ensuring that donations both help people access meals and support neighborhood businesses. Each Breadcoin redeemed also creates a new source of revenue for the local vendor, helping strengthen the local food economy.
Using Breadcoin
Breadcoin is distributed through trusted community partners, including nonprofits, churches, schools, healthcare organizations, and other local groups that know the people they serve.
Since summer 2026, Breadcoin has also been available directly from Breadcoin at rotating locations in Washington, DC, including Union Station neighborhood, Anacostia, Trinidad/Ivy City and Minnesota Ave neighborhood.

We’re working to establish additional community distribution locations in the other cities where Breadcoin operates, making it even easier for people to access Breadcoin close to home.
Breadcoin is intended to help people experiencing food insecurity. We work with trusted local organizations — including nonprofits, churches, schools, healthcare providers, and community groups — that know their communities and can distribute Breadcoin to people who would benefit from it.
In Washington, DC, Breadcoin is also available directly at select community distribution locations, and we’re working to expand these access points in other communities where Breadcoin operates.
Yes. Anyone can purchase Breadcoin to give directly to someone, use it yourself to destigmatize hunger, donate through a nonprofit partner, or support a community event or Shared Table. Purchase Breadcoins
Breadcoin can be redeemed at participating restaurants, cafés, food trucks, farmers markets, and other local food businesses. You can find participating vendors on our Locations page.
Breadcoin can be used to purchase prepared meals and, at some participating locations, eligible grocery items. Accepted items may vary by vendor.
For Local Businesses
Breadcoin brings new customers through your doors, reimburses you for every coin you accept, and gives your business an easy way to strengthen your community. More than 175 food businesses have already chosen to participate. Become a vendor
A Breadcoin vendor ambassador visits participating businesses once a month to collect the Breadcoins they have accepted. Breadcoin then reimburses the business for the full value of the coins.
Donations & Partnerships
Breadcoin is supported by individuals, businesses, foundations, and community partners who believe everyone deserves access to good food with dignity and choice.
Every donation helps put Breadcoin into the hands of people experiencing food insecurity while strengthening local food businesses and the communities they serve.
Monthly gifts have the most immediate impact. They are used to purchase Breadcoin that goes directly into community distribution, providing a reliable source of meals throughout the year. For example, a $30 monthly gift provides 10 Breadcoins that can be distributed through our community partners.
Other donations help expand the Breadcoin network by supporting community partnerships, vendor recruitment, technology, and the infrastructure needed to grow into new neighborhoods and cities.
Yes. Breadcoin Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Our Employer Identification Number (EIN) is 82-3636054.
We partner with nonprofits, schools, healthcare organizations, businesses, and community groups to distribute Breadcoin, host Flash Tables, sponsor events, and expand access to food. We’d love to talk with you.

Breadcoin currently operates in Washington, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Florida through a growing network of community partners and participating food businesses.
