Feeding Hope: Breadcoin Day

Breadcoin Day was an incredible success! We met our goal of increasing awareness of this food token that feeds people with dignity at our local restaurants. Our DC team took to the streets in Columbia Heights, Brightwood and lower Georgia Avenue, waving hand-made signs, wearing t-shirts, passing out literature and – where appropriate – coins to hungry people.

It was gratifying to have a resource for “Dennis,” a man we met who shared with us that his mother had just died. Unemployed and “having the worst month of his life where every single thing has gone wrong,” Dennis cried when he learned that he was holding in his hand the chance to go and get two different meals. He was very hungry.

One team member notably realized how difficult and humiliating it was to try to get people to care about the hunger issues all around them when so many simply ignored her. “How much more difficult,” she noted, “if I was the one begging for my own food.”

Join us next year at our annual event, our hands-on, action-oriented answer to Giving Tuesday.
