MISSION, VISION & VALUES
Building a more dignified food system
● OUR MISSION
Creating economies of dignity
The Breadcoin mission is to create economies of dignity where everyone has a seat at the table through neighbor-funded tokens that open doors for individuals to access nutritious meals and local businesses to thrive.
● OUR VISION
Restoring tables at the heart of community
The Breadcoin Vision is a world where tables are restored as the heart of communities, neighbors are known, and local economies flourish.
● OUR VALUES
What guides our work
We want to see every person fed and provided with the dignity of choosing their own meal.
We are dedicated to the belief that funders, partners, vendors, and Breadcoin patrons all bring something of value to the table.
We want to see local businesses and economies grow, friendships multiply, and connections increase in every community where we work.
● OUR STORY
How Breadcoin began — and where it is growing
Breadcoin began in 2016 in Washington, D.C. to build a local food network using a common payment system. With a focus on economic innovation and the power of shared meals, Breadcoin created the Breadcoin Token: a physical token that can be redeemed at participating local food businesses as an accepted method of payment, helping strengthen community bonds while providing food-insecure neighbors with the dignity of choosing their own nutritious meal. Anyone can purchase and use Breadcoins as a way to help destigmatize hunger and participate in an economy of dignity.

Over time, Breadcoin expanded its holistic model of food assistance to include the Breadcoin Token Network, the Breadcoin Table Network, and the Breadcoin Loan Network. Together, these programs increase access to nutritious meals, combat social isolation through shared tables, and support local small businesses through microloans. What began in one Washington, D.C. community is now creating economies of dignity across the District, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
