New partnership will allow Breadcoin recipients to redeem tokens at select FRESHFARM markets beginning July 8th, 2026.
FRESHFARM and Breadcoin Foundation are proud to announce a new partnership expanding food access across the Washington, DC, region. Beginning today, July 8th, Breadcoin recipients will be able to use their tokens to purchase prepared meals at select FRESHFARM markets and farm stands.
Both organizations are Washington, DC-based nonprofits committed to building a more equitable food system. Breadcoin provides community-funded tokens that can be redeemed for meals at participating food businesses, helping individuals access nutritious food while preserving choice and dignity. FRESHFARM operates one of the nation’s largest farmers market networks in the county with 25 locations throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, including the renowned Dupont Circle market. FRESHFARM has spent nearly three decades connecting communities with fresh, local food while pioneering innovative food access programs.
In addition to expanding access to fresh food, the partnership will provide a new revenue stream for participating producers selling prepared food within the FRESHFARM network. By connecting more customers with local businesses, FRESHFARM and Breadcoin are strengthening the regional food economy while helping ensure nutritious meals remain within reach for more neighbors.
“At FRESHFARM, we believe everyone deserves access to fresh, nourishing food and a say in what ends up on their plate,” said Cat Oakar, Executive Director of FRESHFARM. “Breadcoin’s mission aligns closely with our vision for a food system that is equitable, community-centered, and responsive to people’s needs. By welcoming Breadcoin at our markets, we’re expanding access to fresh, prepared foods while supporting the local entrepreneurs and small businesses that make our regional food system thrive.”
“FRESHFARM has long created spaces where local food, small businesses, and community come together,” said Scott Borger, CEO at Breadcoin Foundation. “This partnership reflects a shared belief that everyone deserves the dignity of choosing their own meal. By bringing Breadcoin to FRESHFARM markets, we’re creating more opportunities for neighbors to access fresh, prepared food while keeping resources circulating locally.”
Through Breadcoin’s community distribution network, trusted organizations and community leaders distribute Breadcoin tokens to neighbors facing food insecurity, regardless of whether they qualify for federal nutrition benefits. The partnership expands the places where Breadcoins can be used, allowing recipients to access ready-to-eat meals through trusted FRESHFARM markets in their neighborhood.
The initial rollout will include the following FRESHFARM locations:
- Columbia Heights Market (Wednesday and Saturday)
- Uptown Market (Saturday)
- Downtown Silver Spring Market (Saturday)
- Union Market District (Sunday)
- Minnesota Avenue Farm Stand (last Thursday of each month)
The long-term goal is to bring Breadcoin to even more FRESHFARM markets, with the Dupont Circle market slated for later this fall.
